In addition, a fully equipped Control and Instrumentation lab, Power Electronics and Circuits Devices Lab, Electrical Workshop have been set up.

Department of MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The department of Mechanical Engineering strives to train students in the mechanical engineering science as well as application of these scientific methods to conceive, organize and carry out scientific design of engineering system.

Mechanical Engineering includes the development, design, manufacturing and maintenance of machinery. Recently, the scope of mechanical engineering has been enlarged. There has been steady progress from simple machines to more complicated and advanced ones. Today, machines with extremely intelligent functions are popular. Therefore, the present age demands mechanical engineering specialists who have the capacity of adaptability and creativity in the new technical areas and have knowledge not only in their own specialized fields but also in wide interdisciplinary fields as well.

To meet these demands, Department of Mechanical Engineering was established on the Faculty of Engineering was started in 2004 with an Intake sanction for 60 students. The department's professional programme includes a deeper study of a number of engineering sciences to which the students are introduced at the core curriculum level, experimental solution of physical problems, techniques and method of design of systems relevant to the contemporary industrial world.

The broad areas include Energy Conversion and Power Systems, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics of Solids and Stress Analysis, Manufacturing Science, Industrial Engineering, Automatic Controls and Engineering Design. Laboratory experience is considered to be an important part of the mechanical engineering programme. There are course-oriented laboratories where the students do experimental work leading to a better understanding of physical situations.

Department of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

In the recent years, the world has seen the area of Information Technology rapidly growing. It deals with dynamic analysis of evolving plethora of information and applying it towards the manipulation of design and development of communication strategies.

Keeping this in mind AMC Engineering College started a B.E. degree level program in Information Technology from academic session 2000-2001 with an intake of 60 students. As the demand for a very fast transmission of information over global networks is growing at an exponential rate, the impact of optical communication is increasingly felt in nearly all aspects of communication technology. Keeping in view the phenomenal growth in fiber-optic communications, the department has also applied for an M.Tech. level program in microwave and optical communication from the academic year 2005-2006.

Emphasis of B.E. Information Technology curriculum is on computer science, software development, networking, communication, web engineering, security, hardware design and management. Specialized knowledge on the analysis and design of information systems is imparted. Further, Industrial training forms an important component of Information Technology curriculum so as the students are able to meet the challenges faced by today's industries. The department of Information Technology has state-of-art laboratories in the various disciplines such as computer networking laboratory, satellite communication laboratory, microwave CAD laboratory, optical communication laboratory, web engineering laboratory, advanced signal processing laboratory, embedded systems laboratory. The thrust areas of the department are communication technology, computer networking, optical communication, data mining and data warehousing. Faculty of the department is involved in the research in the above-mentioned areas and several papers have been published in national and international journals.

Department of Computer Engineering was established in the college in 1999 and a B.E. degree course in Computer Engineering was started with an intake of 60, now increased to 90. First batch of Computer Engineering took off in year 2003 and since then the gradient is only going steeper with more emphasis on current market trends and application-based studies.

In the last few years, Computer Engineering department has developed state-of-art laboratories in the various fields of computer engineering: microprocessor design, computer architecture, database management, image processing, computer networking, artificial intelligence, software engineering, multimedia, CAD-CAM, web designing etc.

The curriculum in B.E. Computer Engineering lay emphasis on design and development of both hardware and software, in addition to software packages. Miniaturization in Computer technology, Multimedia, storage and retrieval of data from databases, compiler construction, operating systems design, computer graphics, computer architecture, microprocessors based design are also the important components of the curriculum. A greater emphasis is on the electronic based technical knowledge. The Civil Engineering Department was established in the year 1946 offering B.E. in Civil Engineering. Since then, more than 2000 civil engineers have graduated and are serving the society world wide. Over the years, department of civil engineering has acquired state of the art facilities and boasts of a highly qualified faculty. In a total of 14 full time faculty members, 7 faculty members have acquired Ph.D from premier institutions such as IISc, Bangalore, IIT Delhi and IIT Chennai and another 6 faculty members are on the verge of completion of their doctoral programme from IISc, Bangalore and Visvesvaraya Technological University. The B.E.(Civil) programme is NBA accredited for 5 years.

The Department of Civil Engineering is also offering Masters programme in Construction Technology since 1983, Environmental Engineering since 1996 and Transport Systems and Management since 2006. It is a recognised research centre of Visvesvaraya Technological University since 2002 and since then more than 15 students have registered for their doctoral programmes.

Examination Pattern

Student’s learning is evaluated submissions throughout the year. Examinations are held twice a year based on semester pattern. This exam is done at 6th - month level. Each subject holds 100 marks paper. Besides this, the regular assignments and projects hold marks on their relevance and importance. A cumulative of which is taken based on which the students are given marks and graded accordingly.

Interior Designing

Interior & Real Estate industry is growing rapidly in India and abroad. Large numbers of foreign multinationals are expanding, offering and off-shoring services to India. Initially, while people paid just for space i.e. exteriors. In the present context, not only exteriors should be appealing, but interiors should also be pleasing.

Today, Exteriors and Interiors come as a package. Real Estate Sector and Construction Firms today employ huge numbers of Interior Designers. While any company may need one architect to work, at least more than 15 interior designers are required hence the career potential is huge for Interiors. Interior designers use their artistic flair, creativity and visualisation abilities to design and supervise the construction or redevelopment of commercial and residential building interiors With increased globalisation, not just homes, but multiplex's, cinema halls, restaurants, shopping malls are also increasing in numbers in most of cities.

Interior Designers get better opportunities as they can cater to their area of specialization. High, Upper-Middle and even Middle-income group people hire interior designers for getting the authentic professional service. The first batch of students for this course at IBAB was admitted in 2002. Fifth batch of students are undergoing training and will be graduating in April 2007. All the students who have graduated from IBAB so far have been placed by large in industry with a few opting for placement in academia. Students are selected after a national-level entrance test and interview.

Bioinformatics involves integrative or multidisciplinary approach that is inclusive, but not exclusive of computational, mathematical and statistical methods to study, organize, analyze and interpret biological information, at the molecular, genetic and genomic levels. With the diversity required for the subject, it has become imperative that students with different backgrounds should come together to acquire knowledge and skills in these areas. With this in mind, the intake of students at IBAB is open to students especially from non-life science streams such as engineering, physical, chemical, mathematical, statistical, agricultural sciences and medicine besides students from life science background. IBAB provides an atmosphere that is conducive for the students to learn subjects from each other’s strengths and background.

Bioinformatics background

Recent times have witnessed unparalleled transformations in both information technology (IT) and life sciences (BIO). Constant innovations in computers and information technology have brought in conceptual changes with wide range of applications in the complex space of biological sciences. With the biological data also growing at a rapid pace in the present “omics” age, it is unthinkable not to exploit the IT/ computer science to organise, analyse and interpret vast amount of biological information. Such applications have already brought in paradigm changes in the way biological science is practiced. In the opinion of distinguished panel of international experts (Nature 23 March 2006), the greatest impact of computer science will be felt in the area of biological science since the greatest challenges and opportunities originate in the biological science area. There is an urgent need to endow new kind of professionals to tackle the scientific challenges in the biological sciences by forging strong alliance between biological and computer sciences. It is not an exaggeration that in the near future Bio-IT interactions may well have the potential to replace/limit wet-lab experiments and enhance the speed of generation of fresh information giving a new direction to the advancement of biological science. The ramifications that these will have on research and commercial activities in the areas of health sciences and agriculture are enormous. It is predicted that concepts of computer science are poised to become as fundamental to biology as mathematics to physics as there is growing awareness among biologists that understanding cells and cellular systems requires viewing them as information processing systems.
