The Civil Engineering Department was established in the year 1946 offering B.E. in Civil Engineering. Since then, more than 2000 civil engineers have graduated and are serving the society world wide. Over the years, department of civil engineering has acquired state of the art facilities and boasts of a highly qualified faculty. In a total of 14 full time faculty members, 7 faculty members have acquired Ph.D from premier institutions such as IISc, Bangalore, IIT Delhi and IIT Chennai and another 6 faculty members are on the verge of completion of their doctoral programme from IISc, Bangalore and Visvesvaraya Technological University. The B.E.(Civil) programme is NBA accredited for 5 years.

The Department of Civil Engineering is also offering Masters programme in Construction Technology since 1983, Environmental Engineering since 1996 and Transport Systems and Management since 2006. It is a recognised research centre of Visvesvaraya Technological University since 2002 and since then more than 15 students have registered for their doctoral programmes.

The Civil Engineering Department is actively involved in offering consultancy and research. The current research area’s include, earthquake resistant masonry structures, self compacting concrete, geopolymer concrete, construction productivity, soil stabilisation, soil dynamics, water quality, fracture mechanics of concrete, irrigation management, and environmental geotechnical.
